Calais Regional Hospital Awarded Elite Distinction as a 2012 Leapfrog Top Rural Hospital
| Calais, December 4, 2012 --The Leapfrog Group’s annual list of Top Hospitals was announced on December 4th in Baltimore, Maryland and included Calais Regional Hospital in Calais, Maine. The announcement came at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting, focusing on transparency as the key to improved hospital safety, and Top Hospital Awards.
“Our ranking as a Leapfrog top rural hospital is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the staff at CRH,” stated Michael K. Lally, CRH Chief Executive Officer. “Delivering high quality, safe care is part of the entire team’s commitment to a solid culture of safety. This award belongs to everyone and is not to be taken lightly. Thousands of hospitals are reviewed and only a select few receive this designation!”

“Over the past two years so much work has gone into developing the Division of Quality Management at CRH, which oversees patient safety, quality care and risk management. Everyone has been involved from the policy development to process improvement to tracking our progress,” said Teena Dominie, RN, MSN, Director of Quality Management. “The real reward has been knowing our patients are having better outcomes. The fact that the organization is being recognized for our staff’s tireless efforts is just a bonus. All should take great pride in this recognition.”
Calais Regional Hospital was selected as a Top Hospital out of nearly 1200 hospitals participating in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey. This year, the Top Rural Hospital list includes a record 13 hospitals. Other hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality.
As a 2012 Rural Top Hospital, Calais Regional Hospital was evaluated on three critical areas of hospital care: (1) how patients fare, (2) resources used to care for patients, and (3) management practices that promote safety and quality. In each of the three areas, Leapfrog asks hospitals to report on nationally standardized measures so healthcare consumers can compare hospitals in their community and across the country. The results of the survey are posted on a website (http://www.leapfroggroup.org/cp) open to patients and families, the public, employers, and other purchasers of healthcare. |
