Emergency Department
 The Calais Regional Hospital Emergency Department is an eight room Level III emergency department providing care to all who present for treatment. The department is staffed twenty-four hours a day with a physician and registered nurses qualified in the emergency treatment of patients with a variety of conditions. National protocols for emergency care are followed including Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Pediatric Life Support treatments. The department participates in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid core measures.(Pneumonia, Acute MI, CHF and Surgery.)
The department has a full time nurse manager to manage the unit. A registered nurse staffs the department at all times The RN may be assisted by other RNs, licensed practical nurses, or certified nursing assistants. The nursing staff provides a range of nursing care, education and support to their patients.
Physicians on staff at Calais Regional Hospital provide on-call services to the emergency department for patients requiring specialized medical, surgical, orthopedic, pediatric and obstetric care.
Patient care in the emergency department is supported by technological equipment such as cardiac monitoring, defibrillators, pulse oximetry and mechanical ventilation. Patients are triaged and treated according to the severity of symptoms. Staff stabilizes patients for admission or transfer to tertiary centers if needed. The department is prepared at all times to activate the Hospital Emergency Response Plan. The department staff emphasizes critical thinking skills, technical skills and competency, as well as interpersonal skills to provide the highest quality nursing care to their patients.
