How can I help?
What types of gifts can I make?
 | | |
 | | Unrestricted Gifts |
 | | |
 | | Unrestricted gifts are credited to the Annual Fund and give the Foundation the flexibility to support areas of greatest need. These gifts help to ensure that important programs and services are not threatened because of lack of funding. |
 | | |
 | | Restricted Gifts |
 | | |
 | | Donations can be made to a wide range of specialty services or programs at the hospital, consistent with the donor’s personal interests. Please call Dee Dee Travis in the Marketing Department at (207) 454-7521 for details of available giving opportunities. |
 | | |
 | | Memorial/Honorarium Gifts |
 | | |
 | | Memorial/Honorarium Gifts can be made in memory or in honor of an individual in any amount and for any specialty service or program. The hospital notifies the appropriate party of the memorial or honorarium gift. |
 | | |
 | | Endowed Funds |
 | | |
 | | A contribution made through either a lifetime gift or a bequest establishes an endowed fund, which may be named for the donor or someone to whom the donor wishes to pay tribute. The principal is preserved and the income supports the purposes of the fund as specified by the donor. |
What assets are considered gifts?
 | | |
 | | Cash/Check |
 | | |
 | | A gift of cash is the most common and immediate way to give to the Calais Regional Hospital Annual Fund. Pledges may be paid over a period of up to five years and are fully deductible as allowable by law. |

 | | Appreciated Securities |
 | | |
 | | A gift of highly appreciated securities - if owned more than one year - generally allows the donor to deduct the full fair market value of the asset and avoid paying capital gains on those securities. |
 | | |
 | | Real Estate |
 | | |
 | | If real estate that has been held for more than one year is given to support the Hospital, the donor - in most cases - receives a charitable income tax deduction for the fair market value of the property. Real estate gifts also can be used to fund a life income arrangement. |
Are there ways that I can give and still ensure an income for the rest of my life?
 | | |
 | | Charitable Gift Annuities |
 | | |
 | | Charitable gift annuities provide the donor with a fixed rate of return based on the age(s) of the annuitant(s) when the gift is made. The donor receives an income tax deduction for a portion of the amount transferred to establish the annuity. Calais Regional Hospital offers this life income vehicle to donors depending on their age. |
 | | |
 | | Charitable Remainder Trusts |
 | | |
 | | Charitable remainder trusts are personalized management plans. They provide a distribution, at least annually, to one or more beneficiaries for life or a term of years with the remainder of the trust going to Calais Regional Hospital Annual Fund. |
 | | |
 | | Bequests |
 | | |
 | | For many donors, a gift made through their will is the best way to make a substantial contribution to Calais Regional Hospital Annual Fund. Donors can leave specific dollar amounts or a percentage of their estate. Through a bequest, a donor can make a gift without depleting current assets and eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes. If you have included the Calais Regional Hospital Annual Fund in your estate, please let us know.
