SURGICAL SUITE
PACU (Post-anesthesia Care Unit)
PROCEDURE ROOM
Calais Regional Hospital maintains the highest standard in operative procedures. The nursing staff is composed of some of the most highly trained and experienced operating room staff available. We are a smaller facility which allows more personalized attention. Patients are referred to by name rather then surgical procedure the patient is having. Family members are kept informed of the patient’s progress. This ensures that the patient’s visit to our facility will be as stress free as possible.

The Ambulatory Surgery Unit - In The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) prepares patients for their surgical procedures. A registered nurse assesses each patient and administers any preoperative medications. Patients will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the surgeon prior to the surgical procedure. Post-operatively, patients are prepared to return home, if the procedure was a simple one, or will be prepared for transfer to the Medical/Surgical floor until discharged.

SURGICAL SUITE - The surgical suite provides state of the art technology to perform minimally invasive procedures. We have high definition digital processing cameras to provide the surgeons with the clearest possible images. Laparoscopic surgery can be utilized for a number of procedures including gall bladder removal, appendectomy, hernia repairs and gynecological surgeries, allowing a much faster recovery period. Orthopedic surgery utilizes the latest implant technology to provide the shortest recovery times.

POST-ANESTHESIA CARE UNIT (PACU) - The recovery phase following a surgical procedure begins with the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). As the effect of anesthesia wears off, the patient is monitored by a registered nurse trained in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Modern anesthetic agents are very short acting and one can usually expect to be fully recovered within about an hour. After post-anesthesia recovery, the patient is returned to the ASU to prepare to go home, or will be admitted to the Medical-Surgical Unit for an overnight stay.

PROCEDURE ROOM - The procedure room provides a facility for a surgeon to perform minor procedures that require only local sedation, such as an external cyst removal. The same state-of-the-art technology that is found in the surgical suite is available in the procedure room. Since patients are fully conscious throughout the procedures performed here, they are able to leave the hospital as soon as the procedure is completed. A registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse assists the surgeon and sees to the patient’s comfort.
