Originally developed to provide a place to offer local treatment options for our patients in need of cancer treatments, Rose Room has grown to provide a multitude of outpatient treatment options.
 Rose Room staff work in close collaboration with Cancer Care of Maine and other oncology groups to provide continuing care to oncology patients.
Medications given include:
- Cytoxan
- Methotrexate
- Gemzar
- Navelbine
- Taxol
- 5-Azacytidine
Injections of Neulasta, Neupogen, Aranesp, and Procrit are also given in Rose Room. These medications are frequently given after chemotherapy treatments to stimulate red or white blood cell production.
Rose Room also offers the convenience of disconnecting continuous chemotherapy infusions initiated by other oncology providers. This allows local patients to return home for the duration of their chemotherapy infusions and saves them a return trip to their oncology provider for the disconnect procedure. Rose Room staff nurses are also trained in central line care and can provide routine care such as flushing of portacaths.
Transfusions of blood and blood products is another service offered in Rose Room. Transfusions may be given as a treatment for anemia secondary to cancer or other chronic diseases. Packed red blood cells, platelets, and fresh frozen plasma are the most commonly transfused blood products.
Treatments for clotting deficiencies are also performed in the Rose Room. These include the administration of specific clotting factors and transfusions of cryoprecipitate used to replace fibrinogen.
Branching out from its original mission, Rose Room now offers care to a variety of patients.
 Other services offered include:
- Infusions of steroids frequently used as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.
- Intravenous administration of antibiotics for patients requiring long-term antibiotic therapy on an outpatient basis.
- Remicade infusions used as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease.
- Hormone injections used to treat prostate cancer.
- Intravenous iron infusions to treat chronic iron deficiency anemia.
- Zometa and Pamidronate infusions.
These drugs belong to a class of drugs known as biophosphates that help slow the bone-destroying activity that occurs with bone metastases. Pamidronate is also used as a treatment for Paget’s disease.
In addition to providing hands on nursing care, Rose Room staff are able to offer teaching and reassurances to patients undergoing cancer treatments. A wide range of teaching materials is available to all patients.
